Maids Leaving Singapore For Higher Pay Elsewhere
Competition for maids is getting hotter and price looks set to rise. If Singapore government does not reduce or remove the maid levy, which is $345 per month, it will become harder to get a maid in Singapore which will ultimately affect the workforce in Singapore.
Indonesian and Sri Lankan maids are paid $280 and Filipinas $300 to $350 in Singapore.
In Taiwan and Hong Kong, they are paid between $690 to $750. They also get day off every week and also on public holidays.
If maids here were to be paid $700 a month and on top of that, $345 maid levy to Singapore government, it will cost more than $1,000 per month. Can you afford?

Why should government reduces maid levy? Why don’t the employers pay more?

Hi Heng Cheong Leong,
Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment.
IMHO, If Singapore government do not reduce the maid levy, the maids here will get lesser and lesser as they would rather go to Hong Kong or Taiwan where they can double their salary. Once there are less maids, the maid salary will go up in order to attract them to come back to Singapore. Those who can pay a higher salary to the maid, will continue to pay. Those who cannot afford to pay a higher salary to the maid, (one of the 2 working adults) were be force to stay home to take care of the family. This will ultimately affect the workforce in Singapore which will then force the Singapore Government to reduce the maid levy or pay more if you have more maids

Live-in maid service should be a luxury item, not an essential item. There are many alternatives from child-care centers to nursing homes to cleaning services and more; surely it’s not a binary choice between live-in maid or single-income.

Hey Heng Cheong Leong,
Letting your maid live in your house is not a luxury but hell. Coz, maids prefer to live outside their employers house than living in. and Richard is right they should reduce maids levy or increase maids salary. Because now the cost of living in singapore is very high they should look on maids salary to. Its really low. I agree with Richard… raise up maids salary or reduce levy…
