An earthquake of 6.7 magnitude has struck the Andaman Islands of India’s east coast at 1140 GMT on Friday 27th Jun 2008, Indian Meteorological Department said.
The quake, which was centered some 115 kilometers southwest of Port Blair in Indian’s Andaman Islands and 975 kilometers southwest of Thailand’s capital Bangkok, caused panic among residents but no damage or injuries, said Ranjit Narayan, the director general of police in the Andamans.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a bulletin saying there was “a very small possibility of a destructive local tsunami in the Indian Ocean.”
However, no tsunami alert has been issued and there is no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
