Iron Horse Bicycle Classic

The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic was the brain child of Tom Mayer and his older brother Jim who worked as a brakeman on the D & R G W railroad. Tom was a young bicycle enthusiast and challenged Jim to a race to Silverton. As the train came by the house, the steam whistle screamed and a race between man and machine started.

The 37th Iron Horse Bicycle Classic is held in Durango, Colorado on Saturday morning May 24, 2008. About 2,500 riders will take off to the small mining town of Silverton.
