Mark MaddenMark Madden was “permanently removed” from his highly-rated Pittsburgh-based ESPN radio show this week for making a controversial statement about Sen. Ted Kennedy, who was recently diagnosed with brain cancer.

“I’m very disappointed to hear Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts is near death because of a brain tumor. I always hoped Senator Kennedy would live long enough to be assassinated.” — Mark Madden, on air at ESPN Radio Pittsburgh last Wednesday

ESPN headquarters released the following statement:

“We’ve taken Mark off the air pursuant to our contractual rights.” — Josh Krulewitz, ESPN vice president for public relations.

Mark McKinnonMark McKinnon, the Austin advertising guru who helped shape George W. Bush’s two winning presidential bids and helped steer Arizona Sen. John McCain from political oblivion last summer to the Republican presidential nomination, is bowing out of the current campaign.

Last summer McKinnon announced he would leave the McCain effort if it was going up against Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in the fall campaign.

“I met Barack Obama, I read his book, I like him a great deal,” said McKinnon. “I disagree with him on very fundamental issues. But I think, as I said, I think it would a great race for the country.”
