The Dead Man on UC Berkeley Campus has been identified as Berkeley resident Maceo Smith, 33, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene in Berkeley’s fifth homicide of the year.

A second victim in the shooting is being treated at Highland General Hospital for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Police are not saying how he is connected to the incident, but they said “he is a victim of a violent crime.” and neither Smith nor the second victim is affiliated with UC Berkeley.

Berkeley Shooting

berkeley shootingA man in his late 20s was shot and killed near the UC Berkeley campus late Tuesday, police said.

The name of the man, not a UC Berkeley student, was not available and he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

His body lay under a white sheet in the Douglas Parking lot as a crowd of at least 200 people circled the crime scene.

It happened about 4 p.m. in the parking lot near the Top Dog restaurant on Durant Avenue.

Apparently some kind of argument broke out between two young men prior to the shooting, said the police.
